Well. We’re finally done with Bared To You, which we’ve been reading since November, and, guys, we’re kind of sick of erotica. We’re doing something at least partially something we’ve never done before! We’re reading Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight follow-up – because fuck reading Twilight – the science fiction/romance The Host! We’ll be spending a lot of time with The Host, everyone. We’re probably gonna be BFFs.
Google Books about The Host
The author of the Twilight series of # 1 bestsellers delivers her brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake.
Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.
Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she’s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.
Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.
Ariel’s pre-Host feelings about The Host
All I know so far is that it’s written by the same woman who wrote Twilight, inspired Fifty Shades, and that they just made a movie that looked really stupid based on this book. Someone’s eyes change colors so it means an alien has taken over their body or something. Riveting! Other than that, I don’t really want to know anything. I’m totally cool if this ends up not living up to our blog name and I love the shit out of it. Better yet, I hope Matt loves it and I hate it. How fun would that be!
Forget all that vampire shit, you guys, now it’s time for aliens. But probably still a crappy romance!
But oh my god, you guys, I just opened my kindle version of the book (I mean, it’s probably the same in all versions?), and somehow I go to this page that’s like “Here’s Stephenie Meyer’s playlist for the book!!!!” This makes me want to write a playlist for the blog. I’m also going to try really hard to remember where to point out the scenes that Meyer’s wanted each song to be in. Spoiler: apparently there’s one in chapter one!
Matthew’s pre-Host feelings about The Host
One of our biggest fears when we started Bad Books, Good Times was that people would demand that we read Twilight. Intriguingly, almost no one has ever suggested that we read Twilight, and it would seem that even the internet is tired of making fun of Twilight. It almost seems like a shame to skip over Stephanie Meyer, though, which is why we’re very glad that she wrote another terrible book that’s been made into another terrible movie.
In true Bad Books, Good Times tradition, we haven’t actually read this book first. Or know what it’s about. Aliens or something? I dunno. The Twilight person wrote it. It’s gotta be shitty, because Twilight was shitty. Although I don’t know what Twilight‘s about. Vampire babies or something? I dunno. Man, we do no research before we make these declarative statements about these novels being objectively terrible. We’re dicks.
Except seriously, read that last line of the Google Books description again: “the first love triangle involving only two bodies”. This is gonna be miserable. You’re gonna love it.
